Councilman’s Daughter to Take Leave of Absence Amid Probe

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) —  Councilman Richard Alarcon released a statement Friday assuring that his family will “overcome” the child endangerment allegations that has caused his daughter, Department of Public Works president Andrea Alarcon, to take a leave of absence from her post.

An investigation was launched by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office after Alarcon’s 11-year-old daughter was found unattended at City Hall around 11:45 p.m. on Nov. 16.

She was taken to a local police station, but Alarcon didn’t show up to collect her for another two hours, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Alarcon, 33, announced late Thursday that she would take a leave of absence from her $130,000-a-year job and asked the media to respect her family’s privacy “during this difficult time”

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa released a statement on behalf of Alarcon, saying she will seek treatment but did not specify for what.

“In order for me to be the best parent possible, I have decided to seek professional help and treatment,” the statement read, adding that her daughter is her “top priority and nothing could be more important to me than her well-being.”

Alarcon’s father, Councilman Richard Alarcon, released a statement Friday, expressing concern over the “recent reports in the media about [his] daughter” and saying that his family will “overcome this challenge.”

“My daughter and granddaughter have a beautiful relationship and I am proud of Andrea’s ability to balance single parenting with an intense professional career,” Alarcon said. “I do not believe these incidents have affected Andrea’s job performance.  She is recognized as an amazing talent at City Hall.”

“As a family, we take these matters very seriously and are supporting Andrea and my granddaughter through this difficult time,” the statement continued.

Neither Villaraigosa nor Alarcon specified for how long she would be on leave.

Charges have not yet been filed.

Alarcon’s mother and father are both facing perjury and voter fraud charges.

Prosecutors say the couple didn’t actually live in the Panorama City home located in the district Councilman Alarcon was elected to represent and in fact live in neighboring Sun Valley.
