RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KTLA) — Police in Rancho Cucamonga are warning about credit and debit card skimming devices found at gas stations around the city.
The skimming device is placed inside the pump and hooked up to work in conjunction with the card reader attached to the pump.
Your card information is copied to the skimmer, and thieves can then download the data and create fake credit or debit cards using the information collected.
This type of crime is hardly new, but what is new is a pay-at-the-pump device that’s designed to stop skimming.
According to investigators, the old-style scanners can be easily hacked. The new ones have a green lock symbol, which authorities say tells you the reader is secure.
Authorities also advise that you can try to move the reader around a little to make sure it’s not loose — which could indicate tampering.
You should also check your credit card statements regularly to make sure that you haven’t been targeted.
