RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) — A woman and a child were killed and two others hospitalized when a car jumped the curb and plowed into a bus bench near a major shopping area Friday.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when a man traveling westbound on Magnolia somehow lost control, swerved across three lanes of traffic before hitting four people waiting at the bus stop near the West Plaza Shopping Center.
Police said two people, including a woman and a female child, died at the scene.
The dead were identified as a 28-year-old resident of Riverside and a 7-year-old resident of Corona, a Riverside police news release said.
A man and a woman were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.
They are identified only as a 31-year-old Riverside man and a 30-year-old woman from Corona.
Investigators say the girl was related to the injured man and woman.
The driver, a 45-year-old Riverside resident, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
He was taken to the Riverside Police Department for questioning.
Authorities said they are conducting a “major accident investigation” to determine the cause of the crash.

He was initially cleared BY LAW ENFORCEMENT of possible cell phone use – hey wow that INCLUDES texting, initially cleared of any alcohol/drug related use, cleared of traffic violations like running a red light, etc… please listen & learn the facts BEFORE making unintelligent comments in a public forum.

Except for a mechanical failure (very unlikely) there is no reason for such a tragedy. The driver should be arrested, prosecuted, and put in prison.

Wow, I didn't realize you were an investigator and mechanical engineer/expert. "Very unlikely"…?? First, I would not presume to know exactly what caused the accident – and yes it is very tragic. I wasn't there and I'm certainly not an expert in those two areas. Are you!? And have you investigated the accident scene? Second, the authorities on the scene have already initially cleared the driver of many violations. It could very well have been a medical incident or mechanical failure. Finally, what happened to due process?! Even you have your rights as an American citizen. Let's hear all the facts before we just "hang 'em high". Your one statement alone could fit in handily in 1930's Nazi Germany. Who cares about due process… just wipe them off the face of the Earth why don't we. WOW Marlin… grow up! I understand the negative feelings being displayed, but unless you know the full details without speculating you should try to keep an open mind. It's a medical condition that caused this t take place. No different than if someone experienced a heart attack while driving. It's tragic no matter what, but it wasn't caused by recklessness or some other foolishness!!! I'm related to the driver and this is why I can shed some light but not details due to an ivestigation going on. Our deepest sympathy to the families of all involved and we pray those in critical condition will pull through!!! We wish this hadn't happended!!!

Hey Angry Driver, get some continuing education – for starters, focus on grammar and basic arithmetic, then perhaps you can also acquire better reading skills, which will enable you to actually do a bit of research before commenting on current events. In general, drivers under the age of 25 are amongst the most dangerous drivers on the road not drivers in their 40s and 50s (that's why we get better insurance rates.) I completely agree with you and thankful of your post. As a relative to the driver I can tell you that it's a medical condition and cannot go into details due to a full investigation going on!!! Some people really shock me with their comments on speclating. The media has changed the story a few times and the truth will come out when the investigation is complete. This isn't something any of us are taking lightly including the driver!!! The unimaginable has happended to our family and other families are now suffering!!! Words cannot explain this, may God reflect in all of us during this time!!!

@Mark – You can actually blame the FCC for text messaging, they require that all cell transmissions carry the 160 or however many characters that texts are limited to. The cell companies didn't invent it, they're merely selling space that the FCC mandates they create.

I think we should ban only scary looking cars with high capacity. We can only drive pink electric Volkswagen Beetles with happy faces painted on them, and only three passengers (no children) are allowed.
Bus stops should all have cages around them, bump stops and flashing red and yellow lights (solar powered of course) to warn the inattentive drivers that they are there. If you are standing at a bus stop, you should be required to wear bright orange safety vests and stand at least four feet back from the curb. There also can be no sharp corners on anything at the bus stop so no one may accidently bump into it. That should be a good start. We can't have any sharp corners or personal responsibilty in the world! Goodness sakes, no!

i was waiting to pull out of lamps plus when i heard crashing sounds. The only thing that stopped that driver from crashing into me was the cement sign he crahed into. The car seemed to have hit at full speed . all these comments posed are just going on about race, age, texting ect. Where any of you guys at the scene ? i cant even describe how it feels to see all of that happen in front of you in such detail. be respectful and pray for those who are still in critical condition and for those lives that wer lost.

My son was at America Tire accross the street & was 1 of the first one on the scene to help. He was extremely shakened…so extremely sad.
