RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) — A woman and a child were killed and two others hospitalized when a car jumped the curb and plowed into a bus bench near a major shopping area Friday.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when a man traveling westbound on Magnolia somehow lost control, swerved across three lanes of traffic before hitting four people waiting at the bus stop near the West Plaza Shopping Center.

Police said two people, including a woman and a female child, died at the scene.

The dead were identified as a 28-year-old resident of Riverside and a 7-year-old resident of Corona, a Riverside police news release said.

A man and a woman were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

They are identified only as a 31-year-old Riverside man and a 30-year-old woman from Corona.

Investigators say the girl was related to the injured man and woman.

The driver, a 45-year-old Riverside resident, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

He was taken to the Riverside Police Department for questioning.

Authorities said they are conducting a “major accident investigation” to determine the cause of the crash.

Sounds like he might have been texting and driving???!!! I hope that is not the case, because that is just stupid! My prayers to his 2 victims.

    • Rich

Did you even LISTEN to the report?! He was initially cleared BY LAW ENFORCEMENT of possible cell phone use – hey wow that INCLUDES texting, initially cleared of any alcohol/drug related use, cleared of traffic violations like running a red light, etc… please listen & learn the facts BEFORE making unintelligent comments in a public forum.

  • Marlin

Except for a mechanical failure (very unlikely) there is no reason for such a tragedy. The driver should be arrested, prosecuted, and put in prison.

    • Rich

Wow, I didn't realize you were an investigator and mechanical engineer/expert. "Very unlikely"…?? First, I would not presume to know exactly what caused the accident – and yes it is very tragic. I wasn't there and I'm certainly not an expert in those two areas. Are you!? And have you investigated the accident scene? Second, the authorities on the scene have already initially cleared the driver of many violations. It could very well have been a medical incident or mechanical failure. Finally, what happened to due process?! Even you have your rights as an American citizen. Let's hear all the facts before we just "hang 'em high". Your one statement alone could fit in handily in 1930's Nazi Germany. Who cares about due process… just wipe them off the face of the Earth why don't we. WOW Marlin… grow up! It's for this very reason that we do NOT need people like you in positions of authority and power!

    • Selena

I understand the negative feelings being displayed, but unless you know the full details without speculating you should try to keep an open mind. It's a medical condition that caused this t take place. No different than if someone experienced a heart attack while driving. It's tragic no matter what, but it wasn't caused by recklessness or some other foolishness!!! I'm related to the driver and this is why I can shed some light but not details due to an ivestigation going on. Our deepest sympathy to the families of all involved and we pray those in critical condition will pull through!!! We wish this hadn't happended!!!

  • stalina

Take the pic down of the bloody crime scene what the hell Is the matter with media. If this was your dead child or mother or friend would u want to see the blood running from under their coroner’s sheets. This is so offensive. Remove it or I will have it removed.

    • Derp

Oh no! Is it offensive? Stop trying to censor everything. Perhaps if people actually see what their stupidity can do they will think twice before driving like idiots. BTW the mother (or a close relative) will see something far worse than just a yellow sheet… they have to ID the body. How will you have the image removed exactly? Dolt.

    • CurmudgeonTx

Now going after companies for inventing a way to communicate is just stupid. Go after people that mis-use the technology…kinda like with firearms…the person controlling it is the one that needs to be prosecuted.

    • Selena

Read the comments I have made to others…..all this is speculation that doesn't help the families that are greiving!!!! It had nothing to do with a cell phone or any other nonsense!!!! He has a medical condition that caused this and I can tell you that much because i'm a close relative. Wait until the investigation is complete and all is told!!! This isn't something easy to deal with and our hearts and prayers go out to the families involved.

  • Angry Driver

People above 50 shouldn't drive at ALL, old bastards can't see the road anymore!
there minds are still at home thinking there drinking there early morning coffe thinking of the 40's & 50's

    • bikey1

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the safest drivers are in the age group between 64 and 69 years old. And studies of the data reveal that teenage drivers — especially male teenage drivers — are the most dangerous drivers on the road.

    • Over50andawesome!

OMG!!! You can't be serious? Do you have any idea just how many people would beat the living sh*t out of you just for posting such a crazy stupid comment?

      • Guest

angry driver.. speak for yourself. BLIND BASTARD!!! Can't you read? It was stated that the driver was 45 YEARS OLD!!! Now do us all a favor and burn your drivers license. If you have one..

    • Rich

I'm with Marty & VNgrunt67 on this one… it seems Angry Driver is an EPIC FAIL! You're a complete moron and probably one those folks lumped into the "future of America" category – which scares the hell out of me and my family! First, don't make public comments if you don't know the difference between "there" and "their" or how to use those two words in a complete sentence! Also, it's spelled "coffee" not "coffe". My father was born in 1942, served over a year in Vietnam (thanks dad & also VNgrunt67 for your service)… I'm 42 yrs old … we have a much better grasp on learning facts, prioritizing pertinent information first and making educated comments and expressing legitimate viewpoints better than yourself. Heck, my 7 yr old daughter has a better grasp on the english language and math than you have. Let me guess… you have to be at least 16 or older since your title is "angry driver" which also scares me! Do everyone a favor and go home to mommy and daddy… let the adults handle this one fella!

      • Jacy

Hey Angry Driver, get some continuing education – for starters, focus on grammar and basic arithmetic, then perhaps you can also acquire better reading skills, which will enable you to actually do a bit of research before commenting on current events. In general, drivers under the age of 25 are amongst the most dangerous drivers on the road not drivers in their 40s and 50s (that's why we get better insurance rates.) Good luck getting some further education. Your ignorant comment SHOULD be enough of a personal embarrassment to motivate you.

  • lee

Love how everyone is going ballistic and beiing judgemental when there is NOTHING in the news report that indicates what CAUSED the crash. But in 8 posts, we get the politicos, the racists, the ageists, and the chauvanists. *sighs* People, really….first, innocent until proven guilty; second, cannot assume cause from a complete lack of info…that is RUMORMONGERING, not INFORMATION or TRUTH; and third, is it not POSSIBLE to have a HEART???

    • Mikaela

I am so very Sorry that u may see it this way this Asshole should be Locked up he Killed 2 People and Injured 2 other's Critically if that is not a Reason to Put his Ass behind Bars then what is??? I can't Imagine that he did nothing???? He was probably Texting as all Negligent Drivers Do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Selena

I completely agree with you and thankful of your post. As a relative to the driver I can tell you that it's a medical condition and cannot go into details due to a full investigation going on!!! Some people really shock me with their comments on speclating. The media has changed the story a few times and the truth will come out when the investigation is complete. This isn't something any of us are taking lightly including the driver!!! The unimaginable has happended to our family and other families are now suffering!!! Words cannot explain this, may God reflect in all of us during this time!!!

  • Amy Dietrich

This absolutelt retarded! There is NOTHING in this story sayin that the man was texting at the time of this accident! At 50 years old, he probably ISN'T a texter. He may have had a medical emergency or anything OTHER than negligence, Lets wait and SEE what happened AFTER the investigation, and THEN make ur comments! How ignorant can people really be these days? WOW!

    • Doc

I'm with you, these comments flaming the driver without any information is completely useless, & accomplishes nothing. However, some people will do anything to see their name in lights, & posting ignorant comments on CNN & other media outlets has become some peoples definition of entertainment.

    • DecentDiscourse

Probably doesn’t text at 50? Girly, (only female equivalent I can think of to “Sonny”) I’ve been “texting” since before you were born. Back then we called it SMS. And you had to use a screen the size of a postage stamp! And the pixels were as big as bowling balls! You kids don’t know how good you have it! Except for battery life. Your new-fangled color GPS Wifi gadgets die faster than a 16 year old in a …. oh, nevermind. Our batteries lasted years on a single charge! Ah, the good old days when phones weighed 8 pounds…

    • ejectorseatadvocate

We clearly need ejector seats at bus stops. what senseless tragedy! these folks could have had a second chance in life only if the bus stop seats propelled into the air and landed safely to the ground with a parachute.

  • Pedro Valdez

@Mark – You can actually blame the FCC for text messaging, they require that all cell transmissions carry the 160 or however many characters that texts are limited to. The cell companies didn't invent it, they're merely selling space that the FCC mandates they create.

  • Bbb

we should ban all cars, this is getting crazy! Ban them all! And spoons too they make you fat, putting all that food in your mouth, why do people need cars and spoons? I've had enough!

    • TAW

I think we should ban only scary looking cars with high capacity. We can only drive pink electric Volkswagen Beetles with happy faces painted on them, and only three passengers (no children) are allowed.

Bus stops should all have cages around them, bump stops and flashing red and yellow lights (solar powered of course) to warn the inattentive drivers that they are there. If you are standing at a bus stop, you should be required to wear bright orange safety vests and stand at least four feet back from the curb. There also can be no sharp corners on anything at the bus stop so no one may accidently bump into it. That should be a good start. We can't have any sharp corners or personal responsibilty in the world! Goodness sakes, no!

  • Ron

Sound like we have a bunch of dumb people talking about something they know nothing about. Always jumping to ideas before the truth comes out. Get real.

  • Ggomez

I read that Harry Reid is going to propose new legislation banning Repugnates from thinking and talking at the same time, they will now HAVE to wear metal or plastic spoons in both ears before being permitted to think and talk at the same time. This new law should be passed and enforced immediately!

  • Rich

Why don't we ban everything – you know – "just in case". We can all live in one big cave, speak to no one, do nothing, aww… live out our lives in sweet ignorant silent bliss. I'm not an old fart (yet) but I do remember a time when things were so much easier… do you know why? We used our COMMON SENSE. Here's a thought, let's have our investigators do their job, let the doctors help heal the survivors of a tragic event like this, and let's find out the FACTS before jumping to conclusions. PS- Can we please ban Justin Bieber, pretty please, he's ruining my little girl (i'm kidding, well a little bit).

  • chris R.

i was waiting to pull out of lamps plus when i heard crashing sounds. The only thing that stopped that driver from crashing into me was the cement sign he crahed into. The car seemed to have hit at full speed . all these comments posed are just going on about race, age, texting ect. Where any of you guys at the scene ? i cant even describe how it feels to see all of that happen in front of you in such detail. be respectful and pray for those who are still in critical condition and for those lives that wer lost.

    • Mom

My son was at America Tire accross the street & was 1 of the first one on the scene to help. He was extremely shakened…so extremely sad.
