The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the event of the year for anyone techie. It’s one of the few times of the year when tech professionals get to catch up with cohorts while getting an exclusive glimpse of the gadgets soon to be dominating the market.
The Tech Report is on assignment at CES 2013.
“It’s really about exploring new trends,” Devin Connors, Technology Editor of Game Front said.
New York City first hosted CES back in 1967 with just 200 exhibitors and less than 20,000 attendees. This year, they expect more than 150,000 people.
Almost every major innovation over the past four decades debuted at CES, including: the VCR in 1970; the CD in 1981; the DVD in 1996; the HD TV in 1998; and most recently, 3D TVs in 2009.
“So if you’re a buyer it’s figuring out what you’re going to put in your store [for] the next 6 to 12 months,” Connors said.
What’s new for 2013?
While Apple and Google are typical no-shows at the show, this year will be the first in a while that Microsoft won’t be showcased on the floor. The Redmond based tech giant, made the announcement to pull out last year at the show.
“On the flip side you’re still going to have a huge presence from medium and small businesses,” said Connors.
And, there’s still plenty to see with over 3,100 companies showing off more than 20,000 products.
“In CES you’re basically seeing what you’re going to be buying for birthdays and for Christmas farther down the road,” said Connors.
This year, the trend seems to be leaning toward connected device–cars and portable gadgets constantly connected to the Internet.
Of course, high-definition TVs are also always popular on the show floors. This year, expect to find plenty of “ultra” high-def TVs putting your current models to shame.
