COMPTON, Calif. (KTLA) — Two shooting suspects were arrested after a pursuit in Compton, during which one of the men fired an AK-47 at deputies.
It all began around 6 p.m. Tuesday when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies heard gunfire near Long Beach Boulevard and Oak Street.
When they arrived at the scene, they saw a gunshot victim lying in the street and spotted the two suspects with an assault rifle in a car.
They started chasing the suspects’ car, and one of the men opened fire with an AK-47.
After a short chase, the suspect with the rifle got out of the car and briefly barricaded himself inside a home before he was arrested.
The other suspect continued driving, and was taken into custody after crashing into an innocent motorist at the intersection of Alameda and Elm streets.
The condition of the innocent motorist was not immediately known. No deputies were hurt.

I read that the firearm used may have been the AK47. If it was a semiautomatic AK47 then it's not an assault rifle. The assault rifle AK47 has full auto capability. Would appreciate more info.

Most reporters and editors are highly firearms-ignorant and wouldn't know what you're talking about. You could attach a pipe to a piece of wood, paint it black and tell them it's a machine gun, and they'd wet themselves while they wrote their "exclusive report on illegal arms manufacturing". Refer to the recent gun buy-back debacle where they gushed over the "rocket launchers" that were actually just empty launch tubes.

Yes, they are.

Wrong. A semi-auto is considered an assault rifle. That's why when states like CA ban assault rifles, you can't buy a semi-auto AK or similar rifles. It's called an assault rifle ban and it includes various semi-autos. The stupid thing is, they ban assault rifles like AK's and AR's, but you can still buy rifles like a Mini-14 or Mini-30 which fire the same rounds just as fast. Go figure.

It depends. Just because it is semi-auto doen not mean it is classified as an assault weapon. It has to meet certain criteria:
folding or telescoping stock
a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon
a bayonet mount
a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor

An assualt Rifle is a selective fire weapon. Semi Autos are not Assualt weapons

And you don't know what you're talking about. A semi-auto AK or AR among several others are legally classified as assault rifles. Fully autos are illegal across the board no matter what. Semi-auto are legal or illegal depending on which scumbag is in office at the time.
January 9, 2013 at 2:17 PM
full autos are not illegal across the board. The only illegal ones are the ones made after 1986 and that are registered with a current tax stamp.

Wrong i can go to any local gun shop and purchase what you ignorantly call an "ak" or "ar" here in ca, dont believe me? call your local cop station or turners outdoorsman and ask them, stop spreading your ignorance like facts.
January 9, 2013 at 9:57 PM
You talking to me? I didn't say you couldn't buy an AK or AR in the gun shop. That's my point. Of course you can. I just said you can't buy or possess a fully auto. What are you talking about?

Not an assault rifle, huh? http://anendlesswar.com/804

You are using an opinion piece. While I do not disagree with you I would advise using facts not someone's opinion
January 9, 2013 at 2:37 PM
True, but I offered it as my two cents because it's my opinion piece. I used it to point out that what you call something, based on petty semantic distinctions, is meaningless if the effect of the things you are describing is identical.

You have idiots riding down the street shooting someone, and the talk is the correct pronunciation of the type of weapon.
Here's a topic relating to the incident . . . If you're convicted of shooting someone, death penalty 30 days later. If you don't take the coward (which you are) way out by killing yourself.

I wonder if they shot at the cops with the rifle cocked to the side like they do in the movies, that would just make the stereotype that much more awesome..
