Recruit Who Tried to Flee Boot Camp, No Longer a Marine

SAN DIEGO — A Marine recruit was tried to escape from boot camp in his boxers, is no long with the Corps.

Benjamin Yi, 22, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was detained by airport police last week after being spotted dashing across the runway at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field.

marine-escapeeThe recruit had arrived earlier in the week and was undergoing initial screening before beginning training, the Marine Corps said.

But a new days later, it appears Yi had a change of heart and jumped over two fences, one topped with barbed wire before darting across the tarmac.

He then hid in a janitor’s van near the Southwest Airlines terminal.

Yi was caught by local law enforcement wearing only his boxer shorts and a T-shirt.

He apparently lost his pants while navigating the barbed wire which also left him bleeding from several cuts.

Apparently, it is not the first time that a Marine recruit has bolted.

According to the NY Daily News, such dashes to freedom have become relatively commonplace at the airport which is located across from the boot camp.
