LAX Flight to Seattle Lands With Unconscious Pilot

PORTLAND (KTLA) — An Alaska Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Seattle had to make an emergency landing in Portland after the pilot passed out.

The plane landed without incident at Portland International Airport around 9 p.m. Thursday night.

There were 116 passengers and five crew members on board Flight 473.

According to Federal Aviation Administration officials, the pilopilot-passes-outt lost consciousness during the flight and the co-pilot had to land the plane.

A doctor on board the airplane treated the pilot until it landed in Portland and medical personnel arrived, he said.

The captain was likely suffering from food poisoning or the flu, Alaska Airlines said Friday.

Alaska Airlines representatives say all of the airlines’ pilots are trained to fly solo.

The airline did not release the name of the captain but said he has been flying with Alaska for 28 years.

The first officer has been with the airline for 11 years.
