BIG BEAR, Calif. (KTLA) — Police in the mountain resort town suspended their search Friday night for Christopher Jordan Dorner but plan to resume the search Saturday morning at 7:00.
Investigators believe Dorner, 33, a fired Los Angeles Police Department officer and former Navy lieutenant, is involved in the murders of a Riverside police officer and two others.
“Once it gets dark out there and the snow keeps falling and they have no air support, I don’t know how effective they would be in that situation,” spokeswoman Cindy Bachman of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Throughout Friday, more than 100 officers searched through fresh snow for clues to the whereabouts of Dorner.
The manhunt for double murder suspect and alleged cop killer Christoper Dorner, 33, continued Friday in the Big Bear area.
Heavy snow was falling on Friday morning, prompting authorities to call off the aerial search.
However, an exhaustive ground search was ongoing, and all Bear Valley schools were closed for the day as a precaution.
The Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski resorts were open for business on Friday, after closing early on Thursday.
Schools were also locked down on Thursday, as a fatigue-clad SWAT officers began combing the area following the discovery of Dorner’s burned out pickup truck.
About 125 officers would eventually be used to search hundreds of homes door-to-door and follow what was believed to be Dorner’s trail.
San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said at a news conference Friday morning that authorities searched throughout the night.
Over 100 law enforcement officers from across Southern California are still involved in the search, according to McMahon.
They plan to focus on the area where Dorner’s torched Nissan Titan pickup truck was found, as well as the mountains above that.
The truck was found on Thursday off Forest Ford 2N10 and Club View Drive in Big Bear Lake. The area is about a mile away from Bear Mountain.
Footprints were found leading from the truck into the snow. McMahon said it didn’t appear the tracks were headed in any specific direction.
He said that crews followed the tracks through the forest until they lost them when the ground became frozen.
McMahon said there are a number of places up on the mountain that authorities haven’t gotten to yet, and that there are a lot of abandoned cabins in those areas.
SWAT officers are using snowcats and armored vehicles outfitted with chains to access the more remote areas amid the heavy snowfall.
The search will continue regardless of the weather, according to McMahon, until Dorner is found or authorities determine he has left the area.
Big Bear is expected to get 6 to 10 inches of snow about 4,000 feet and 2 to 6 inches of snow below 4,000 feet, the National Weather Service said.
Snow levels could drop to between 2,500 and 3,000 feet Friday morning and to 2,000 feet by the evening.
Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, the weather service said, and scattered showers are expected throughout the day.
It was unclear whether Dorner was prepared for the cold conditions or the rugged terrain surrounding Big Bear Lake.
Meantime, McMahon said that they are processing Dorner’s truck in conjunction with police in Irvine, Los Angeles and Riverside. He didn’t have any further information.
Dorner is suspected of killing a young Irvine couple, as well as a Riverside police officer, as part of a long-standing grudge against the LAPD.
He is believed to have penned a long, angry manifesto on Facebook saying that he was unfairly fired from the force and was now seeking vengeance.
Monica Quan, 28, an assistant college basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton, and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, were found shot to death in their car last Saturday.
Quan’s father had been an LAPD captain, and a subject of Dorner’s wrath in the manifesto police say he wrote.
Late Wednesday and on into Thursday, Dorner allegedly went on a violent rampage, shooting three police officers in Riverside County, one of whom died.
Police are reminding residents in the Big Bear area to keep their doors locked. If you see Dorner, or anything unusual, you should call 911 immediately.

I would have to say pray for the officers, their families. Being a police officer is a thankless job, that gets less and less respect. The comments I have read saddened me that so many people were against police officers. Shame on you. Society is falling apart and people do not value life. The suspect is a murderer, and a question is why did he not bring this to the attetnion of the media earlier. He was going through the courts, and certainly could have contacted major news networks. I could not sleep last night and proceeded to turn on my computer to the news. I saw the "Breaking News" of the shootings around 4:00AM and then followed three stations live feeds on line. The first press conference was called, the speaker shaken by the events and uncertainty. After witnessing the fear, the dismissal of the LAPD on Doner's "Manifest Destiny"…it is apparent, this is not a plea of a serial killer…a thousand scenario's of what this highly trained soldier could perceivably play out. . I have so much sympathy for those who have lost their loved ones and for the innocent Civilians who's only crime was going to work in a vehicle identified as vaguely similar to the "Code Blue" APB! It is unfortunate to be a black man driving a truck with a tall stature today in Southern California! I have worked with the LA Sheriff's and LAPD over the years. I can only say, there were absolutely wonderful honest police and their was a majority of bigotry bravado spatted out shamelessly by power hungry, jaded perhaps from their job, police! The other piece to the paradox with Doner is we sent him to war….He was a good soldier learning the rules of engagement….(we being our military and we the people). Soldiers and public are told to expect the nameless faceless "Collateral Damage"! Stay Loyal to the cause! Human beings no matter what uniform you put on..no matter what your culture….as a species….violence is triggered throughout man's history. There is no justification for our collective violence in this country. But this man Doner, needs to be taken alive…..his story be investigated, and he serve his life sentence…..as the end, does not justify…..the means.

Anyone who takes a few minutes to read his letter knows that many (nearly all) of his grievances ring as true. Moreover, I have personally witnessed "187 capers" occur outside my own doorstep. Hence, this man is not a lunatic. His methods are wrong and immoral. He will pay for them with his life. But the culture of corruption that he rails against must be corrected. Under the FOIA the press has the duty to investigate his claims. If the press does not, then the press will guarantee that more acts like this one will occur. Justice is the antidote to killings like these, though I fear that the focus of the press will be on gun control again. Such a mistake will only foment more killings of this sort and make the press complicit in these murders. When children pledge allegiance to the flag every morning, they are led to believe that there is Justice for all. There is not. Until there is, expect more of these "integrity" killings because you yourselves destroyed the ethical system that taught victims to turn the other cheek. Enjoy this Brave New World that you have created for yourselves.

This is a good reason that all SANE civilians should be able to own any weapon! You never know what type of person is going to loose it. This is what the 2nd amendment is all about.

He's a SUSPECT. There is absolutely no proof that he did anything. His "rambling manifesto" was posted on FACEBOOK on an account that was SUPPOSEDLY attributed to him (it's damn easy to make fake accounts).
He's been tried (and potentially executed )in the court of public opinion. I say BS. We aren't getting the whole story by any means here – just one, arguably, extremely biased side.
We do know a couple of things.
1. He's only a suspect – nobody knows if this guy did anything. Maybe he's running for his life?
2. LAPD want him dead. Enough that a sister PD filled a truck full of bullets nearly killing 2 innocent women and ask questions later.

Putting his manifesto out there was a wrong move. The cops need it but the public doesn't need to read it, and all it does is feed into what this killer wants. Sick bastard.
He WILL BE taken out, and hopefully no one else with him. If SWAT gets involved, it will REALLY be over. This guy is a whackjob with weapons. The worst kind, and ALL officers are targets. So very sad and so very scary. Police risk their lives EVERY day. Then they have to deal with some sick fuk like this.

My ex is an L.A. County Fireman. He had told me that firemen themselves set fires in order to get overtime pay, especially brush fires. So I do believe the waverunner/ATV comments. Public "servants" get jaded, and spoiled by the money. One FD overtime shift for Los Angeles County is $800 – $1000 of taxpayers' dollars – per SHIFT. Another thing they do is take Toys for Tots toys home for their own children. I experienced this with my own children while visiting the firestation, and it was one of the last straws leading to my divorce.
