Female Paper Carrier, 71, Shot During Manhunt

TORRANCE, Calif. (KTLA) — Two women are recovering after their pickup was riddled by police gunfire in Torrance, in what investigators are calling a case of mistaken identity.

torrance-picThe officers who opened fire were on the lookout for fugitive Christopher Dorner. Another vehicle was also mistakenly fired upon not far away.

The first incident happened about 5:30 a.m. Thursday in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue.

It involved LAPD detectives from the Hollywood division, who were reportedly on a protective detail for an LAPD captain and his family named in Dorner’s manifesto.

Emma Hernandez, 71, was delivering the Los Angeles Times with her daughter, 47-year-old Margie Carranza, when officers apparently mistook their pickup for that of Dorner.

Hernandez was shot in the back, and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Carranza suffered a wound from glass that struck her hand and received stitches.

“Tragically, we believe this is a case of mistaken identity,” Charlie Beck, chief of the Los Angeles Police┬áDepartment, said on Thursday about the shooting.

Hernandez and Carranza are both expected to be okay. They have retained attorney Glen T. Jonas.

“There was no warning, there was no orders or no commands… just gunshots,” Jonas told reporters.

According to Jonas, the women’s vehicle was “the wrong color and the wrong model,” compared to Dorner’s.

He said that police “had the goal of administering street justice” and “didn’t take the time to notice that these two older, small Latina women didn’t look like a large black man.”

“We trust that the LAPD will step up and do the right thing and acknowledge that what they did was unacceptable and we’ll deal with it,” Jonas said.

The second incident, which involved Torrance police officers, happened around 5:45 a.m. at Flagler Lane and Beryl Street.

The Torrance officers had apparently heard about the nearby incident, and while en route they encountered a dark pickup that looked similar to Dorner’s.

They opened fire on the pickup. The man who was inside was not hit. So far, there has been no word of plans for a lawsuit from him.

All "Pig" agencies should change their motto on their "Pig" cruisers to read "To Serve and Protect 'Ourselves'. Oink Oink!!! They should have them watch an Adam-12 marathon before receiving their badges.

I like how they shortened the article. As if it was to lenghty for their servers. Also that is a Toyota not Nissan with black rims. I'm sure they will justify it as "In my Exprience". Nissan and Toyota both say just that on the tailgate. I hope those cops lose there jobs. I don't hate cops but it open season on anyone in a blue truck.

I heard Beck has put his Nissan Titan up for sale. Who knows, he might even consider donating it to the Archdiocese.

Hey cops I have a delivery route in mid-city. Business is slow. I usually have my wife and daughter help out. Maybe you can help me win the 'lottery'. By the way its a 75 Datsun pick-up. Plates read "need money"

Despite the fact I truly appreciate information, I do not think it is in the best interest of the manhunt for the news helicopter to FOLLOW AND FILM SWAT TEAM MEMBERS ON THE GROUND!!!!! Great way to give that crazy, very dangerous man infromation! Provde news please, but stay out of the way. I'm a resident in Big Bear, watching a swarm of law enforecement and MEDIA helicopters fly around. Clear out, please. I'm changing the channel to a credible, reasonable news station, that is, if I can find one.

And don't forget to elect Tony Villar (a.k.a. Antonio Villaraigosa) when he runs for governor of California… because why settle for just a small piece of paradise when
the entire state can run as smooth as Los Angeles?

Lets hope the officers who shot these women are brought to justice as well. How dare they! I truely hope these women sue the agencies involved.

SO THIS IS THE LAPD TYPICAL PROTOCAL ? WHAT WAS THE REASON TO SHOOT AT THIS VEHICLE.. THEY OBVIOUSLY DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG TO PROVOKE A SHOOTING NOW THAT WE KNOW WHO THESE TWO WOMEN ARE…… THIS IS THE TYPE OF ILLEGAL CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS THIS EX LAPD IS TALKING ABOUT….

I have blue Tundra and am very nervous about driving home from work. I can camp out in my office tonight and hope things settle down. Maybe I can call the police and ask for an escort home–don't believe they would shoot me first. One of those days.

Nissan Titan is a full size pickup. The truck pictured is clearly a Toyota Tacoma, which is not a full size pickup. Just proves Dorner is right, These guys will find any reason to shoot up a vehicle.

  • Truthfully Speaking

It is very hard to feel any sympathy for the LAPD. That is like asking me to feel sorry for a rapist….nah, not gonna happen. They know they are corrupt, and this guy has their number loud and clear. I know what it feels like to be past the point of rational thinking. I hope Chris feels some sense of peace before one of the trigger happy police takes him out.

  • Alex

Oh my god, they even got the vehicle wrong! This is obviously a Toyota Tacoma, not a Nissan Titan. They don't even look similar; I really hope this is a reporting error and the cops didn't just "guess" with deadly force..

SOOOO Sickening! They should be so ashamed of their police departments. Talk about Overkill! Police are supposed to be trained to handle high levels of stress and extreme situations! im terrified to know im a women and drive a large truck, i too could be the next victim of mistaken identity of a large black male! absolutely disgusting! LA will cover this up just like everything else they cover up! get some real cops that are willing to protect us! not shoot us all!!
