PLANTATION, Fla. — It was a close call for an owl after getting hit by an SUV in Florida.
Sonji Coney Williams was driving about 60 mph down the Florida Turnpike when she realized she hit something.
She assumed that whatever it was had become road kill, and didn’t pull over to check.
Little did she know, the owl had survived the hit and slipped through the SUV grill.
It wasn’t until the next day that she found out the owl was caged in her SUV.
“There was a family that flagged me down and said don’t move, don’t move, you have something in the grill of your truck,” she recalled.
“I said, ‘Yes, what is it?’ And they said, ‘It’s an owl.’ And I said, ‘An owl?’” Williams related.
She called Florida Fish and Wildlife, and an officer opened the hood and freed the bird.
It turns out it was a great horned owl, which are common in Central Florida.
Officers said the owl appeared to be in good shape and didn’t suffer any injuries.
