YUCAIPA, Calif. (KTLA) — Funeral services are still pending for Jeremiah MacKay, the San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy killed in the final gun battle with Christopher Dorner.
Hundreds of rounds were fired on Tuesday as deputies surrounded a cabin in Seven Oaks where Dorner was believed to be holed up.
Two deputies were hit and were airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where McKay later died from his wounds.
MacKay, 35, leaves behind two children, a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-month-old son.
His body has been moved from the coroner’s office to Mountain View Mortuary.
The sheriff’s department had a small service on Thursday with color guard and bagpipes, then the procession to the mortuary was led by deputies on motorcycles.
MacKay joined the sheriff’s department in July 1998, and he was also a field training officer with the department.
He was also a sergeant-at-arms for the Inland Empire Emerald Society, a charity that benefits the families of fallen soldiers.
MacKay was a sheriff’s deputy based out of Yucaipa, and he graduated from Rim of the World High School in 1995.
“He was just a good man, and it’s sad to see that his life was taken by someone else,” neighbor Robert Aguilar said.
“The fact that he just had a child about four months ago, and he was so happy with the little boy.”
Aguilar said that, just a few days ago, the two had a conversation about former LAPD officer and accused killer Christopher Dorner.
“He was hoping that it wouldn’t end like this. He was hoping that he would jsut surrender,” Aguilar recalled.
“This one you just never know if the guy’s going to pop out, or where he’s going to pop out,” Jeremiah MacKay told the Associated Press.
“We’re hoping this comes to a close without more casualties,” he said. “The best thing would be for him to give up.”
The other deputy, identified as Alex Collins, underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon and is expected to be okay.

Dorner cried like a baby during his probation, complained all the time and even shot himself in the hand in the academy. Everything was a racial thing with him. This guy was a nut case from day one that should never have been an officer or allowed to be a captain in the reserves.. Does not say much for LAPD screening. I cannot stand people making justifications for this homicidal nutcase who killed the poor daughter of a cop who had her whole life ahead of her. Take a page from Philadelphia pd and drop a bomb on the cabin and be done with this human debris.

Well said Steve, half of these idiots think that because he wore a uniform, that made him a cop. He never made probation, and when his training officer saw the signs that he was a nut job and backed it with the negative performance evaluation he started to pull out the race card. Funny he made accusations against her 2-3 weeks after the so called use of force incident happen, but conveniently after she gave him an unsatisfactory evaluation. Glad that dirt bag is gone, feel bad for the Navy!

I just listened to your reporter interview the owner of the cabin where Dorner died. She told him she had lost her husband recently, her father last week and now the cabin. The reported out of respect should have ceased the interview, but like all reporters just couldn't let her go. He kept pressing the poor lady for more information. When are reporters going to start respecting the rights and lives of people. Another disgraceful interview.

Why they just didn't transfer Dorner's training supervisor to the Fullerton Police Department where beating mentally ill and disabled people is a blood sport and is encouraged is just beyond me. Fullerton is happy to have any departments rejects and thugs. All of this unnecessary bloodshed could have been prevented.
