Family of Boy Stabbed in Heart at Mall Files Lawsuit – Jim Nash Reports

REDONDO BEACH, Calif.  (KTLA) — The family of a 13-year-old boy, who was stabbed in the heart while at the South Bay Galleria, is filing a lawsuit against the mall’s owner, according to the family’s attorney.

“We thought he’d be in a safe place, going to the mall to watch a movie. And obviously he wasn’t safe,” said Maria Williams, the boy’s mother.

The incident took place on Dec. 29 on the third level of the South Bay Galleria, in front of the AMC Theaters.

A man attacked the boy, as well as a 13-year-old girl, stabbing each of them multiple times, according to police who believe the attack was random.

“It was just a random, senseless act of violence,” said Rich Williams, the boy’s father.

Both victims survived the attack after undergoing surgery. The boy has returned to school, but will eventually need a second open-heart surgery to repair scar tissue.

Surveillance video briefly captured the suspect walking.

He is described as a black man in his 40s with a gray beard and a tall, medium build. He was wearing a beanie and a green and brown fatigue-type jacked.

A $25,000 reward was being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Police asked that anyone with information contact the Redondo Beach Police Department tip line at (310) 937-6685.
