Public’s Help Sought in Identifying Copper Thieves – Christina Pascucci Reports

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — Officials are seeking the public’s help in catching a pair of thieves that are destroying city property in order to steal copper wire.

City Attorney Carmen Trutanich released surveillance video Tuesday in hopes of identifying the two suspects.

The video shows what appears to be a man acting as a lookout while another man allegedly pulls copper wiring from the ground near a street light.

Authorities say there have been hundreds of similar thefts in the past year and it is costing the city.

“The cost associated with repairing this so far this year is over a million dollars,” said Trutanich.

Police say the entire crime takes thieves just a minute and twenty seconds.

The problem has become so widespread that L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge offered a $25,000 reward in December for help in catching the thieves.
