Suspect Arrested in Brutal Assault of Elderly Woman – Wendy Burch Reports

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) — Police have arrested a suspect sought in the brutal assault of an 80-year-old woman during a home invasion in Riverside.

Shannon Lynn Jones, 25, of Bishop, was arrested around 2 a.m. Tuesday after a short vehicle pursuit in the Wildomar area of Riverside County.

She was driving the victim’s 1995 Toyota Camry during the pursuit, and after crashing the vehicle, she ran away on foot, according to authorities.

After a short search of the area, she was found and taken into custody without incident.

Jones will be booked for attempted murder, home invasion robbery, burglary, animal cruelty and vehicle theft, police said.

The unidentified victim was found by neighbors Monday morning at The Meadows mobile home park in the La Sierra Neighborhood of Riverside.

She had been stabbed multiple times and badly beaten. She was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, and is expected to survive.

Patrol officers had responded to two other calls earlier the same morning from two other mobile homes in the same park.

At around 6 a.m., a resident reported finding a woman hiding in their shed.

The woman was apparently rambling that people were trying to kill her. She may have left her purse and ID behind at that location.

Then, at around 6:30 a.m., residents in another mobile home reported that a woman had been in their home and had stabbed their dog.

They said she was wearing surgical gloves and had a construction hat, and that there was a kitchen knife at her feet.

Resident Suzy Lyman and her husband remained calm, and they were able to talk the woman into leaving their home.

“He calmed her down, he said, ‘I have this gun. You’re going to be all right, nobody’s going to kill you,’” she recalled.

“You’re in my house and we play by my rules now, and I have this gun that I’m going to protect you with,” her husband said.

“It’s terrifying becasue we kept thinking what would have happened to us possibly?” Suzy Lyman added.

The 80-year-old woman was found by a neighbor around 8 a.m. who heard moaning coming from the woman’s mobile home.

It was later determined that the woman’s car was taken during what was believed to be a home invasion robbery.

Another car next door to her home had also been tampered with. Detectives believe all four incidents were related.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Jim Simons at 951-353-7138.
