LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich has suspended reelection campaign activities indefinitely following the death of his mother Saturday.
The Trutanich campaign said Esther Trutanich died Saturday afternoon in a San Pedro hospital following a bout with pneumonia. She was 91, according to public records.
Trutanich said in a statement that he felt “truly blessed to have been raised by such a wonderful woman” and canceled campaign events scheduled for the weekend. He faces three challengers in Tuesday’s municipal primary.
A USC Sol Price School of Public Policy/L.A. Times poll published Saturday showed Trutanich to be in a tight race with former lawmaker Mike Feuer and private attorney Greg Smith. Another private attorney, Noel Weiss, also is on the ballot but has not had the money to mount a substantial campaign.
The contest is expected to go to a May runoff between the first- and second-place finishers, as none of the candidates appears likely to win a majority on Tuesday.
