Shooting Suspect Named ‘Person of Interest’ in Murder – Elizabeth Espinosa Reports

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KTLA) — The man who tried to shoot and kill a San Bernardino sheriff’s deputy Friday was named a “person of interest” in the murder of an elderly woman, according to police.

Detectives found 52-year-old Brian David Forrett dead off Highway 38, apparently from self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It appeared that Forrett had also suffered gunshot wounds from the shootout with deputies in Yucaipa Friday.

Police believe Forrett may have been responsible for the murder of a 79-year-old woman last month.

Wanda Rose Heczko, Forrett’s former landlord, was found killed in the bedroom of her home in Riverside.

“All of the other roommates were telling us about how violent of a man he was, how he accosted Wanda at one time and how he just had these verbal fights with her all the time, called her all kinds of nasty names,” said the victim’s tenant, Rick Maguire.

“And if anyone would park in his spot over here, he would go into a tirade for a half hour,” he added.

Heczko had lived on Doverwood Drive in Riverside for the past 30 years and rented out a property two doors down from her house. She also reported rented out rooms in her home, which worried one of her neighbors.

“She always rented to anybody, like she didn’t check the background. She had problems with people doing drugs, alcohol. And one day the police came here looking for one of her tenants who was on probation,” said Elizabeth Montijo.

Investigators were waiting for forensic test results and would not immediately reveal what evidence they had possibly linking Forrett to Heczko’s murder.
