GRANADA HILLS, Calif. (KTLA) — The westbound 118 Freeway was shut down for about five hours Monday morning after a fiery multi-vehicle crash that left two people dead.

118-sky-picIt happened about 3:40 a.m. just east of White Oak Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP investigators say the first collision happened when a car, believed to be a Toyota, rear-ended a semi-truck.

The driver of the semi was able to pull over to the shoulder, but the other car was still in the middle of the freeway.

It was subsequently hit by a Toyota Celica driven by a 29-year-old woman.

The female driver of the Celica was injured and taken to the hospital. The two people who were inside the other car were killed.

The impact ignited a vehicle fire, and authorities said it was impossible to get to the victims.

CHP officers said the wreckage was so severe that they were not able to tell exactly what kind of vehicle was involved or the gender of the two victims.

All the westbound lanes were closed for hours, and the backup extended for miles.

The freeway was finally cleared shortly before 9 a.m., and traffic was moving normally.
