SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KTLA) — Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels was arrested and charged with DUI in Santa Monica Friday night, police said.
Michaels, 68, the current play-by-play announcer for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” was arrested around 10 p.m. at a DUI checkpoint, where police say he made an illegal U-turn.
When officers spoke to him, they said they smelled alcohol on his breath and gave him a field sobriety test.
His alcohol level was reportedly slightly over the legal limit.
Michaels spent a little more than five hours in the Santa Monica City Jail before being released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.
Santa Monica police said he was extremely cooperative. Michaels is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
NBC officials say they’ve contacted him about his arrest, but they have not said if it will affect his work with the network. Michaels has not commented.
