Santa Monica May Regulate Outdoor Fitness Classes – Christina Pascucci Reports

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KTLA) — Santa Monica may soon crack down on outdoor fitness classes that draw dozens of people to public parks.

City leaders will decide Tuesday whether to move forward with a new ordinance that would ban trainers and large groups from some parks.

Supporters of the ordinance say big exercise groups are destroying historic parks.

Fitness instructors holding classes in designated areas would be charged a $100 permit fee, plus 15-percent of revenue under the proposal.

Classes would be limited to fewer than 150 people, and trainers would be required to carry insurance to cover any injuries.

Parks that could ban the classes altogether include Euclid, Joslyn, Muscle Beach, Ozone, Pacific Street, Park Drive and Schader parks.

The Santa Monica City Council is expected to discuss the issue around 7:00 p.m. at Tuesday’s meeting.
