Gayle Anderson was live in Temecula because the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival Barrel Races will be held tomorrow, April 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Promenade Mall in Temecula. This is not your rodeo-style barrel race, but a mini-drag race of old wine barrels converted into soap box derby cars, chariots, motorcycles, planes and even horses which are then pushed or pulled to a finish line. Because the race cars cannot be motorized and must be pushed or pulled through the race course, racing is done in teams. In honor of the 30th anniversary of the festival, this year’s barrel races will have 30 teams competing. In addition to bragging rights, these teams are competing for tickets to the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival in May. Ten racers will receive a pair of tickets to attend the festival, where their barrel race car will be displayed from May 31st to June 2nd. Also, the “Best Decorated” and “Winning Racer” will represent the Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival at the City of Temecula’s 4th of July Parade.
The Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival opens Friday, May 31st at 3:00 p.m. and runs through Sunday, June 2nd. This weekend-long event features more than 20 Temecula Valley wineries, over 40 hot air balloons, hundreds of booths featuring arts and crafts, exhibits and souvenirs as well as concerts on two different stages. Scotty McCreery, American Idol‘s season 10 winner will headline Country Friday at the festival. There will also be a freestyle motocross (FMX) show with gravity-defying stunts. The festival welcomes 40,000 guests annually to the Lake Skinner Recreation Area, surrounded by the Shipley Preserve. This park setting provides natural vistas to enjoy while flying aboard a hot air balloon or on the ground.
Festival hours are Friday from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For ticket prices and more information about The Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, visit their website.
