Mental Patient Who Threatened Kids Back in Custody

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) — A man with a history of threatening children is back in custody after he escaped from a mental health facility in Orange County on Friday.

Norris Phuoc Nguyen, a schizophrenic, walked away from the Royale Health Care Center in Santa Ana, where he had been hospitalized since last December.

Police say he came back to the facility about 24 hours later and had told investigators he stayed at a friend’s house.

Detectives say it doesn’t appear he committed any crimes while away from the facility.

The 23-year-old had been hospitalized on and off since 2011, when he walked into the Westminster Police Department dressed in camouflage and holding an assault rifle, saying he wanted to “die by cop,” Garden Grove Police Chief Kevin Raney said.

Then in December, Nguyen became obsessed with the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Raney said.

According to Rainy, Nguyen spoke repeatedly both about protecting children and endangering them.
