Attempted Carjacking Leads to High-Speed Pursuit, Shootout
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KTLA) — Two people were killed on Thursday in an incident that began with a murder and ended with a shootout 40 miles away.
The incident began when officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at 11:48 a.m.
When officers arrived at the parking lot of a mall in Yucca Valley, they found a man inside a vehicle, dead from gunshot wounds after an attempted carjacking.
Arriving officers spotted the two alleged assailants, who fled in a sedan on the westbound 10 Freeway.
A pursuit ensued, which reached speeds of 100 miles per hour and lasted nearly 40 miles, officials said.
The driver of the sedan eventually crashed the car into a light post in the parking lot of a business development and a shootout took place.
One man was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, and another was seriously injured. One officer suffered minor injuries in the shooting, police said.
The officer was transported to a local hospital and was expected to recover.
A separate homicide unit was investigating the initial scene in Yucca Valley.
