Carjacking Suspect Shot by Santa Ana Police
SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) — Santa Ana police shot an alleged carjacker Tuesday following a brief pursuit that ended in a crash.
The incident began shortly after 6 a.m. when a woman driving a tan Toyota Camry was allegedly carjacked in Anaheim, officials said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department attempted a traffic stop a few hours later when they picked up a LoJack signal on the Camry.
A man and a woman inside the car did not stop and the pursuit began, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The chase continued through Anaheim before the Camry crashed into a tree on 18th and Alona streets near Santa Ana College.
Police opened fire before the man and woman could be taken into custody, Bertagna said.
The man, Petricia Muntean, 19, was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening wound.
The woman, Karen Ensaldo, 20, was also taken to a hospital, with a cut to her chin likely suffered in the crash.
No officers were injured in the incident.
