The Girls on the Run 5K is produced by California Triathlon in conjunction with Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County (GOTRLA), a non-profit organization that provides an after-school program to empower girls ages 8-14.
More than 300 GOTRLA participants will take part in the 5K along with hundreds of community members of all ages. As a GOTRLA guest coach, Peyton List often visits program sites to support participants in the 12-week program. Using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running, the GOTR program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The program culminates with the girls completing a 5K to demonstrate they can accomplish anything! “Girls on the Run is all about empowering girls and showing them they are strong and capable. After completing the GOTR program and training with our volunteer coaches, they’re ready to complete a 5K. It’s inspiring to see their sense of accomplishment when they cross the finish line. The girls realize that they can really achieve anything and we are thrilled KTLA5 will be there to capture it,” said Molly Snow, Council Director of Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County.
The 2013 event will be the first GOTRLA 5K event with the nonprofit organization’s name in the title. It is being produced by California Triathlon, a non-profit statewide community service group. California Triathlon approached GOTRLA about putting on an event for them after witnessing the positive effect the organization is having on the community and the girls involved. “California Triathlon is pleased to support the mission of Girls on the Run by presenting a 5K race on May 19th around the Pasadena Rose Bowl,” said Thom Richmond, President and Founder of California Triathlon. “The race is a culmination of a lot of hard work by the girls and all the volunteers, and we are very excited to cheer them on to that well-deserved finisher’s medal.”
GOTR is a 12-week after-school program that empowers girls and teaches them to be strong in mind, body and spirit. At the end of the program, GOTR participants run—or walk, hop or skip!— in a 5K event that reinforces they can accomplish anything!
