HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) — California state park authorities were considering a plan Sunday to raise parking fees on holiday weekends at select Orange County beaches this summer.

The plan would increase the all-day parking flat fee from $15 to $20 during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends and also during special events at several southern California beaches, according to state parks Director Anthony Jackson.

Sunbathers enjoyed good weather at Huntington Beach on Sunday.

Southern California beaches were operating in the black but were partly subsidizing less profitable state beaches, Jackson said.

Environmental group Surfrider asked for an hourly option for day-trippers who spend less than a full day at the beach.

Out of California’s 1,100 miles of beach, a third are controlled by the state Department of Parks and Recreation.
