Thoroughbreds Rescued at Auctions
A local organization called “Auction Horses Rescue,” run by Megan Gaynes, joined us this morning to talk about the increasing number of thoroughbred horses that are being sent to auctionoften right off race tracks all across California. Most are sent to auction because they are not fast enough, injured or they are brood mares that can no longer give birth. So-called kill buyers often pay for these horses at auction and then transport them to Mexico and Canada where it is legal to slaughter them for their meat. Megan and her group work to rescue the horses at auction and do the vetting to find safe new homes for these animals.
