This is “Wonders of the Deep,” where animals dwell in extreme conditions beyond the reach of sunlight. What’s that covering the exterior of the Craft and Folk Art Museum on Wilshire Boulevard? It’s the work of Yarn Bombing Los Angeles, a group of knitters, who have created this public installation to expand the definition of public art. Knitters and donations are welcome!

Saturday is Nick Gabaldon Day in Los Angeles County. He grew up in Santa Monica in the 1930’s. He was the first Black-Latino surfer in Southern California. He died June 5, 1951 when he crashed into the Malibu Pier while attempting a surfing move known as a “pier ride” or “shooting the pier.” In his honor, there is a day free surfing lessons, beach explorations, and information at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium
