PICO RIVERA, Calif. (KTLA) — The investigation continued on Friday into a head-on collision in Pico Rivera that left three people dead, including two children.
The crash was reported around 8:30 p.m. near San Gabriel River Parkway and Rose Hills Road by the 605 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A Honda Civic carrying five people was traveling northbound on San Gabriel River Parkway.
The driver lost control and crossed over the center line, colliding head-on with a Nissan Sentra traveling southbound, police said.
The male driver of the Civic was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman who was in the passenger seat was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
Three children who were in the back seat of the car were ejected, according to investigators.
Two of the children died and the third was hospitalized in critical condition. Their ages were not immediately known.
There were two people in the second vehicle. They were taken to the hospital, where they were listed in serious condition, authorities said.
“The exact circumstances of whether or not they were racing, I’m not sure of,” said Scott Miller, of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“All I know is we had reports that one automobile was traveling at a very high rate of speed and lost control,” he said.
There were some reports that the people inside the Civic were returning home from a graduation party.
