One Killed When Tree Falls at Youth Summer Camp Near Yosemite
SONORA, Calif. — A staff member was killed, and four other workers injured when a tree fell near a building Wednesday morning at a Jewish youth camp near Yosemite National Park.
The worker who died was identified as Annais Rittenberg, according to a press release by Camp Tawonga.
Rittenberg, 21, was a student at UC Santa Cruz and worked at the camp as an art counselor.
The four injured staff members were airlifted to nearby hospitals, and were later identified as Lizzie Moore, Cara Sheedy, Juliet Ulibarri, and Anya Schultz.
About 8:30 a.m., a tree tipped over at Camp Tawonga in Tuolumne County, triggering a mass casualty response from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Firefighters and U.S. Forest Service park rangers worked through the morning to try and remove the tree.
