Man Dies After Being Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in South L.A.
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — A man died early Friday after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in South Los Angeles and transported to a hospital, authorities said.
The victim, a 39-year-old transient, was apparently jaywalking across Avalon Boulevard between 83rd and 84th streets about 10:45 p.m. when he was hit, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division.
Witnesses provided conflicting descriptions of the vehicle, which may have been a dark van or a silver SUV, though they agreed that it had tinted windows, police said.
Onlookers said they heard loud screeching, then saw the man roll onto the hood of the northbound vehicle before being thrown forward several feet. The driver maneuvered around the man before fleeing eastbound on 84th Street, one witness said.
The victim died about 1:30 a.m. while undergoing surgery at the hospital, police said. A felony homicide investigation was underway.
If the driver, who was still at large Friday morning, had not left the scene, it seemed unlikely that charges would have been filed because the victim was reportedly jaywalking at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information regarding the accident was asked to contact the LAPD at (877) 527-3247.
