MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) — Lifeguards cleared swimmers from the water off Manhattan Beach on Tuesday evening after a shark was spotted by a sheriff’s helicopter.

Shark sighting in Manhattan Beach

The incident happened at the north end of Manhattan Beach, close to El Porto, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The shark was reportedly a juvenile and about four feet long.

Personnel in the air alerted people on the beach with their PA system.

A county lifeguard boat also responded to the area, but lifeguards downplayed the sighting.

One lifeguard official told the Los Angeles Times that it was “pretty much a nothing deal.”

Still, some people said the sighting made them wary.

“There were quite a few copters and quite a bit of activity on the beach,” said Manhattan Beach resident Hugh Grant.

“I overheard the lifeguards ask the surfers to clear the water, and then there were continuing helicopters,” he said. “Apparently, something bad was swimming in the water.”
