SAN DIMAS, Calif. (KTLA) — A local teacher’s aide was free on bail Friday after being arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student that resulted in a child.
Mandy Morales, 31, had worked at the McKinley Children’s Center, Canyon View School in San Dimas since 2004.
She was no longer an employee, school officials said.
Morales was arrested on Wednesday at her home and booked on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
She allegedly began a two-year affair with the student in 2011, when he was 16 years old, and later gave birth to his child, authorities said.
A DNA test confirmed that the teen, now said to be 19 years old, was the child’s father, according to investigators.
The investigation began in December after a co-worker found a journal allegedly belonging to Smith that detailed the relationship, officials said.
The McKinley Center is a private K-12 school that provides special education services to students ages 5 to 22, according to its website.
Morales underwent a background check before she was hired, school officials said, adding that the school was cooperating fully.
Morales was free on $50,000 bail, and was scheduled to be back in court on Sept. 11.
Investigators were looking into the possibility that there may be additional victims.
Anyone with additional information was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau at (877) 710-LASD (5273).
