HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KTLA) — A woman was critically hurt and a police officer suffered minor injuries in a crash involving a police cruiser in Hawthorne Wednesday, authorities said.
It happened around 2:45 a.m. in the 3700 block of West El Segundo Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A Hawthorne police sergeant was driving eastbound when he collided with a Honda coming out of an alley, investigators said.
The driver of the Honda, 36-year-old Karina Preza, was ejected from her car.
She was rushed by ambulance to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.
It was not clear if she was wearing a seatbelt, investigators said.
The police sergeant suffered minor injuries. He was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
The sergeant was responding to a call when the crash occurred, CHP officials confirmed.
However, officials did not say whether he had his lights and sirens on at the time.
All lanes of El Segundo Boulevard were closed between Doty and Kornblum avenues for the investigation, according to the CHP.
