Shooting in San Bernardino Sends Officer, Suspects to Hospital

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KTLA) – Gunfire broke out during a traffic stop on Friday in San Bernardino, injuring one police officer and two gunmen, authorities said.

The shooting started when two officers attempted to stop a sedan at 9:12 p.m. in front of a liquor store at the corner of Base Line and Sierra Way, police said.

As the two officers approached the vehicle, two of the four people inside the car opened fire, according to San Bernardino police.


A San Bernardino police officer and two men were wounded during an exchange of gunfire after a traffic stop.

The officers returned gunfire striking two people in the legs, police said. One of the officers was also shot in the leg.

Police identified the men as Eric Newson, 22, of Los Angeles and Keijuan Mayfield, 22, of Redlands.

The two other occupants in the car took off running and remained on the loose.

All of the injured were transported to the hospital, however, none of the injuries was life threatening.

The injured officer has since been released from the hospital.

Newson was charged with attempted murder.  As of Saturday afternoon, no charges had been filed against Mayfield.
