DOHA, Qatari (KTLA) — Former Ecuadorean international and Mexican league soccer star Christian Benitez suffered a heart attack and died Monday after complaining of stomach pain, his agent said.
He was 27.
Benitez, who previously played for Ecuador international, led the Mexican league in scoring last season.
‘Chucho’ as he was known, passed away in Qatari one day after playing his first game for his new club El Jaish, according to his agent Jose Chamorro.
El Jaish confirmed the news of his death on their website.
“The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of the player,” a club said in a statement Monday.
