BEVERLY GROVE, Calif. (KTLA) — An elderly couple in Beverly Grove were beaten and robbed by two men in the home they’ve shared for nearly 40 years.
It happened on July 9 around 10 p.m.
Gary Agopian, 91, and his 84-year-old wife Sally were getting ready for bed when Gary went out to the back patio to lock the outside gate.
“When I went to the door two shadows pushed me inside,” Gary Agopian said.
It was immediately apparent the men were after the couple’s safe, which contained $20,000 in cash and hundreds of thousands of dollars in antique jewelry, he said.
“He says open it,” Agopian said. “I refuse to open it, so they hit me in the head.”
Sally Agopian heard a noise and woke up to find two strange men in her home and her husband semi-conscious.
The men allegedly hit both of them on the head with a shovel and kicked Gary repeatedly.
After two hours of threats, ransacking the house and trying to open the safe themselves, the two men stole the safe along with the their car.
In the weeks prior to the robbery, the couple had responded to an advertisement to sell some of their watches and jewelry.
They told the prospective buyer about the safe, and gave him their home address.
Police believe the couple was targeted by someone who heard about the safe.
Despite the significant financial loss, the couple said it’s the loss of their sense of security that has affected them the most.
