Gayle Anderson was live in Inglewood with information about the Music for Relief connection to the 6th annual 2013 Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF), which culminates with a street festival Saturday, August 3rd. Saturday’s street fest is headlined by Linkin Park, the two-time Grammy Award-winning rock band. A portion of the street fest’s ticket sales will benefit, Music for Relief, the nonprofit organization started by Linkin Park to support disaster relief and the prevention of natural disasters through various environmental programs.
Music for Relief is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has raised more than $5 million for survivors of multiple disasters across four continents including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, China’s Wenchuan earthquake, a cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Music for Relief also supports environmental programs as a means of disaster risk mitigation including the planting of more than one million trees to help reduce global warming. The organization was recently recognized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for the Download to Donate program to raise funds and awareness in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.
Based in Los Angeles, Music for Relief has worked locally to reforest burn areas following a wildfire in Sylmar, provided donated water bottles for wildfire first responders and supplies for families who lost homes in wildfires. Earlier this month, Music for Relief volunteers helped plant community gardens in Inglewood. This project was a collaboration with Do Good Bus and the Social Justice Learning Institute. The goal of the event and gardens is to provide fresh produce for families living in Inglewood, increasing access to and consumption of fruits and vegetables among youth and their families who lack affordable and accessible healthy food choices. The produce is harvested and shared with the entire community. The largest of these community gardens is at Queens Park.
