SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) — An investigation was underway in Santa Ana on Thursday after a veteran officer shot and killed an unarmed man, police said.

Police responded to a disturbance call in the parking lot of a strip mall near Harbor Boulevard and McFadden Avenue around 3 p.m on Tuesday.

As police approached the man, identified as Hans Arellano, 22, there was a short foot chase and an altercation, police said.

Hans Arellano was unarmed when a Santa Ana police officer fatally shot him.

Arellano was shot in front of a juice shop at 622 S. Harbor Blvd. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

“It was a confrontation. It wasn’t having a casual conversation or just running from an officer,” Santa Ana Police Chief Carlos Rojas said.

“There was some very odd behavior that took place,” he said.

The officer who fired the fatal shot was a woman with 13 years on the force, Rojas said.

Arellano was homeless and a father of two children, according to Celine Lopez, who said she was romantically involved with him.

Arellano had been tying to turn his life around recently, Lopez said.
