L.A. Fire Department Captain Dies While on Duty

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Matthew McKnight died while on duty early Monday morning, according to a post on the department’s website.

McKnight, 51, and a 31-year veteran of the LAFD, was near the end of a five-hour watch when colleagues found him unresponsive at 1:07 a.m. inside the LAFD Metropolitan Fire Communication Center at 500 E. Temple St.

Despite efforts by colleagues, who performed CPR, applied a defibrillator and instituted advanced life support measures, McKnight was pronounced dead Monday morning at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, according to the website.

McKnight, a resident of Thousand Oaks, was survived by his wife, teenage daughter and pre-teen son, as well as two brothers who are active-duty members of the LAFD.

Memorial arrangements were pending. Details were expected to be posted at the LAFD News and Information blog.
