SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KTLA) — Police on Saturday shot a killed a man who was armed with a handgun and driving a tractor after he allegedly shot and killed his mother, authorities said.
Officers responded to a house in the 1100 block of Mellow Lane after receiving a call from a man who reported that his brother, 29-year-old Ryan Carnan, had called him and said he had shot their mother at her home, according to a statement from the Simi Valley Police Department.
The house was on fire when the officers arrived, police said. Ventura County firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.
Authorities entered the burned-out house and found the body of a woman who was later identified as Carnan’s mother, police Commander Stephanie Shannon said.
While officers were at the crime scene on Mellow Lane, 911 dispatchers began receiving calls from residents in the nearby neighborhood of Bridal Path, police said.
The callers said a man was driving a tractor through the neighborhood and shooting a gun.
“He comes by and I said, ‘Are you shooting up there?’ Then he looks at me with the gun. He has the gun,” witness Norm Treveva later told KTLA. “I said: ‘Oh. You are shooting up there.’ He just stared at me with this really weird-looking look on his face. Then he just drove by.”
Members of the police department’s SWAT team were summoned to the area.
“Police are showing up. They’ve got tactical vests and M4s,” witness Anthony Maciel said, referring to a style of carbine rifle. “They’re moving up the street, telling us to get out. Like, ‘Get inside.’”
The man on the tractor, later identified as Carnan, was found by Special Operations Unit officers, according to Simi Valley police.
“It sounded like they kind of exchanged gunfire at one point — probably about two dozen rounds,” Maciel said.
Carnan was shot and killed by the officers, authorities said. None of the officers were injured.
A handgun was found at the scene, according to police.
Simi Valley police detectives were investigating the incidents in cooperation with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
The cause of Carnan’s mother’s death was also under investigation, and an autopsy by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office was pending.
