Pedestrian Forces Shutdown of 55 Freeway in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) — A man was listed in critical condition on Sunday after a brief struggle with police officers on the Costa Mesa (55) freeway.

Santa Ana police officers responded to a call around midnight that a pedestrian was walking on the freeway near Dyer Road exit.

Investigating officers shut down all lanes to traffic.

Police made contact with the man, but he refused to cooperate, according to Santa Ana police officers.

There was a confrontation and struggle between the man and police, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The man stopped breathing during the struggle and was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Bertagna added.
