Investigators Seek Motive in Simi Valley Rampage
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KTLA) — Authorities on Sunday continued their investigation into the fatal rampage in which a Simi Valley man allegedly killed his mother before he was shot and killed by police.
Ryan Carnan, 29, was armed with a handgun Saturday and appeared to be shooting at random while driving a tractor through the neighborhood of Bridal Path, police and witnesses said.
He was killed when a confrontation with Simi Valley police resulted in an officer-involved shooting, authorities said.
Meanwhile, Ventura County firefighters knocked down a fire at the nearby home of Carnan’s mother. Her body was later found inside.
“We want everyone to kind of respect the fact that they’re dealing with the loss of their mother and their brother,” a family spokesman said Sunday, referring to Carnan’s brother and sister, who were at the burned-out house in the 1100 block of Mellow Lane. “If you could just give them some privacy — that’s really all we’re asking for.”
A police spokeswoman said Saturday’s incident was not authorities’ first encounter with Carnan.
“The Simi Valley Police Department has had prior contacts with Mr. Carnan, most recently in ’08,” Commander Stephanie Shannon said. “Those were mental health-related calls.”
