Driver Smashes Into Costa Mesa Store, Takes Empty ATM

COSTA MESA, Calif. (KTLA) –┬áThe driver of a pickup truck that smashed into a store in Costa Mesa Wednesday morning took off with an empty ATM, according to the store’s owner.

ATM-StolenSurveillance video from inside Bay Crest Wine and Spirits at 333 E. 17th St. showed the truck as it smashed through the front window of the store around 5:15 a.m.

It then took less than a minute for the thief to go into the store, pull an ATM through the broken window and load it into the back of the truck.

What the thief probably didn’t know was that the store’s owner, Bryan Nye, emptied the ATM and cash register every night for security reasons.

Although the window and ATM would need to be replaced, Nye said disappointing his kids was the worst part of the ordeal.

“The biggest bummer of the whole thing today is I was actually planning on taking off and going to Sea World with my kids. So instead of Sea World I got a call from the alarm company,” Nye said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Costa Mesa police at 714-754-5373.
