Two Killed in Shooting in South LA; Police Searching for Gunmen

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KTLA) – Two men were killed in a shooting early Sunday morning in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The incident happened at the corner of South Figueroa St and W. 50th St, near the Harbor Freeway.

Initial calls were made to 911 at about 5 a.m. saying there had been some type of traffic accident, according to Los Angeles police.

Moments later, witnesses reported hearing gunfire.

Two men were found dead at the scene, police said.

One body was located in the driver’s seat of a car parked in middle of 50th Street, according to police.

The other was only a few feet away near another car.   The area was shut down for several hours as police questioned possible witnesses.

“The apparent motive at this time appears as though our victims may have possibly been mistaken as gang members in the area,” LAPD Captain Tom McMullen told KTLA 5.

The victims’ names were not yet known.

Neighbors told KTLA 5 this stretch of Figueroa between Vernon Street and Century Boulevard has long been a trouble spot for gang activity and prostitution.

The LAPD 77th Street Division is investigating, and believes there may be more than one gunman involved.

So far no arrests have been made.
