A man under investigation by Irvine police for lewd conduct with a child was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Tuesday.
An officer-involved shooting occurred a short time later, according to Engen.
“The subject they were here to interview for their investigation was shot,” Engen said.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ronald Williams, was later arrested on suspicion of sexual conduct with child 14 or younger.
Cindy Jackson, who was applying to live at the complex as a tenant, was inside at the time of the shooting. She said another applicant spotted the shooter.
“A female who was applying as a prospective resident as well said, ‘There’s a man with a rifle outside and I think he’s starting to shoot,'” Jackson said.
Jackson and several others went into a tutoring room to take shelter.
“We then were asked to run out the left side of the building by a police officer, and we ran about two blocks up the road while shots were being fired,” Jackson said.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed a damaged white car on the sidewalk near the complex.
It was unclear how the vehicle ended up there.
“We don’t have exact details right now of the moment in time when the shooting occurred. That will be coming later when the investigation is more complete,” Engen said.
No officers were injured in the incident, according to Engen.
Williams was shot at least once and transported to a local hospital.
His condition was not released, but police said he was conscious and talking.
