An explosion destroyed a Riverside house and sparked a stubborn fire Friday, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to a home on Cochise Drive, near Ivanpah Place, about 4:20 a.m. and a ruptured gas main was still burning more than two hours later. The blaze was knocked down by 7:30 a.m.
Asked if investigators suspected that a gas buildup may have caused the blast, Riverside Fire Department spokesman Bruce Vanderhorst said, “That’s correct.”
However, he added: “At this time we’re exploring all possible options.”
The house had been uninhabited for the past 30 days as the owners conducted renovations, neighbors said.
Two neighboring houses were damaged by the explosion and subsequent fire.
