A driver was ejected from his vehicle and died late Wednesday in Chino Hills while he was being pursued by police, authorities said.

A pickup truck is seen on the 71 Freeway in Chino Hills after a fatal police chase Wednesday night.

While investigating the man on suspicion of sexually abusing a girl, police had seen the man leave his apartment in the 12900 block of Ramona Avenue about 8 p.m., the San Bernardino Sun reported.

Chino police officers followed a white pickup truck into the parking lot of a Costco warehouse in the 13100 block of Peyton Drive about 11:40 p.m., witnesses said. The driver then reportedly accelerated onto a curb and down a hillside that separates the lot from the 71 Freeway.

The truck flipped over at least once as it moved down the slope and onto the freeway’s southbound lanes, crossing the median before landing upside down.

The driver, who was not identified, died at the scene.

Traffic near the Chino Avenue exit was slowed during an ensuing SigAlert that lasted some 4 ½ hours. All lanes were later reopened in both directions.
