LAPD Releases Surveillance Video in Search for Clerk’s Killer

Still searching for clues in the slaying a 99-cent store clerk who is the mother of five, Los Angeles police on Wednesday released surveillance video of the killer.

Martha Sanchez was shot to death Sept. 17 during a robbery of the Happy Bargain 99-cent store in the 7400 block of Broadway in South Los Angeles.

Sanchez, who commuted from East Los Angeles and supported five children, did not appear to resist the robber, police have said. But he shot her nonetheless.

Surveillance video released Wednesday showed a black male walking outside the store after he fired off several rounds at Sanchez, who was 39.

“He destroyed our family,” said Juan Arevalo, the victim’s brother, at a police news conference Wednesday. “If somebody knows this guy, this person, call the police, and help us.”

The man in the 14-second video is seen wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, black pants cropped above the ankles and a puffy green jacket.

A person of interest is in custody on unrelated charges, police officials said Wednesday. But they would not say if the man in custody is the same as the one shown in the video, and they hope that witnesses or those who recognize the killer will help.

“I would consider him to be as dangerous a person as you can imagine,” Los Angeles Police Department Detective Eric Crosson said. “If he decided that he needed to kill an unarmed woman by herself in a store, I can’t imagine there’s anybody he wouldn’t be willing to hurt.”

Other images from the robbery were too graphic to release, Crosson said.
