Man Charged in Slaying of Clerk at South L.A. Discount Store

An alleged gang member has been charged with murder in the death of a mother of five who was fatally shot while working as a clerk at a discount store in South Los Angeles, officials announced Friday.

Eric Atkinson, 31, was charged with murder in the death of Martha Sanchez.

Eric Atkinson, 31, was charged with one count of murder with the special circumstance of robbery and personal use of a firearm, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office stated in a news release.

Atkinson, a reputed gang member, allegedly shot and killed Martha Sanchez during a Sept. 17 robbery of the Happy Bargain 99-cent store¬†in the 7400 block of Broadway in South Los Angeles, according to the DA’s office.

A store surveillance video captured the fatal shooting. Sanchez, who commuted from East Los Angeles and supported five children, did not appear to resist the robber, police said.

Prosecutors had not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

Atkinson was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
